Japanese Samurai Armor
Edo Period
This is an impressive and very complete set of
Samurai Armour, dates to the early Edo period (1600-1861).
Referred to as a Tatami Armour,
Kabuto, is a folding type helmet with heavy chain mail with
lacquered iron plates over hemp cloth and also lined with heavy
hemp cloth edged with doe skin leather. Each of the iron
plates has a centered iron spike with the lower plates having a pair of crests
on each one.
Doh, is a tatami or folding one with lacquered
iron plates held together with chain mail. The plates also
have a large mon, the skirt parts same construction and materials.
Sode, or sleeves, are lacquered iron plates with
chain mail over purple cloth , backed with heavy hemp cloth and
edged in doeskin leather. The thigh apron has lacquered iron plates held
by chain mail on purple hemp fabric. The shin guards are lacquered
metal plates with chain mail, matching purple fabric.
The armor box is lacquered wood and in average
condition.
Overall a very good quality set of Samurai Armor
that dates to the mid Edo period and is in good condition with
only a couple of minor breaks to the lacing and some moth and
age damage to the purple cloth ( normal for an armor of this
age). All parts match and have had no restoration at all.
A rare type of Samurai Armour .
